Guide to FDA and Maufacturer Recall on Pet Food

Stella and Chewy’s issue recall for Listeria

If you spend any amount of time on social media and the internet, you’ve probably seen a number of pet food recalls in recent months.  In order to help you make the best decisions for your pet, and to save you time scouring the web for the most recent information, we have compiled some trusted links that you can refer to for information about current and future recalls.

Recalls on pet food products can happen for many reasons. Manufacturers or the FDA can pull a product due to anything from excess salt in the product to Salmonella or Listeria contamination.  The manufacturer must report any recall to the public. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires all pet food be safe to eat, manufactured and produced in sanitary conditions with no harmful additives, and for the package to be labeled accurately. These requirements are the same for the food you and I eat. There are many websites you can visit to get the latest list on recalls and a few that will send you email updates with the newest recall. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) lists all the recalls for the last 90 days and the reason it was recalled. It also has an archive list that includes all recalls for the last year.

Pet Food Recall, is a site that similarly lists the recent recalls, as well as gives you the option to receive email updates on the most recent reports. If you have any concerns that your pet has eaten a recalled product or is showing any signs that concern you, contact your veterinarian to discuss and make an appointment.
