60 Minutes Segment – Cancer Treatments for Dogs Lead to Breakthroughs for Humans

March 20, 2023
Our research paves the way for developing new diagnostic tests and treatment options that can potentially improve how we diagnose and treat complex diseases like cancer.

The similarity of disorders in pets and humans is widely recognized, and the innovations we are working on may be useful for human patients in the future. Ethos Discovery, our not-for-profit scientific incubator, conducts clinical studies involving pet animals with naturally occurring diseases through our network of partner hospitals.

The Intersection of Human and Veterinary Medicine

60 Minutes recently aired a segment on CBS in recognition of the 20-year anniversary of the NIH program in canine comparative oncology. Watch the full (13 minute) segment below; Anderson Cooper offers insightful scientific context and stories from people whose lives have been impacted by the innovative treatments that have crossed species from canines – family pets – to humans.

Our work and the comparative oncology program at the NIH are indelibly interconnected through our esteemed colleague Dr. Chand Khanna. He is credited with proposing “what might have seemed like a radical idea: creating a program at the National Institutes of Health to promote the study of naturally occurring cancer in dogs” to his bosses at the NIH. He went on to become the first director of the Comparative Oncology Program.

In 2015, he proposed another radical idea: creating a non-profit scientific organization within a veterinary health hospital group. He also went on to become the first CEO of that organization: Ethos Discovery.

Your eligible pet can play an important role in our work.

Ethos Discovery offers results from our studies free of charge, and without restriction, to parties interested in commercialization for human health. In doing so, we contribute to the development of novel diagnostic and treatment options that may lead to cures for complex medical conditions such as cancer. These advancements ultimately lead to improved patient outcomes and survival rates, especially for animals and humans with diseases that currently have limited diagnostic and treatment options.

Learn more about our studies and consider enrolling your eligible pet.
