Elevating Veterinary Nursing and Education
April 28, 2025For more than two decades, Ed Carlson, CVT, VTS (Nutrition), has been a driving force in veterinary nursing. Now serving as Director of Veterinary Nursing Education at VetBloom, Ed’s journey reflects deep commitment to learning, leadership, and the critical role of nutrition in animal health.
Ed’s career began with a love for animals and a curiosity about medicine. Over time, he advanced through roles as a veterinary technician, hospital manager, and clinical educator, eventually earning his Veterinary Technician Specialty (VTS) in Nutrition in 2014—an honor held by only 35 veterinary nurses worldwide. Today, Ed continues to lecture nationally, mentor others, and advocate for education as a key to veterinary success.

Building a Career at Ethos
Ed’s connection to Ethos began more than 24 years ago, when a job opening aligned with his move from New Hampshire to Massachusetts. What started as good timing turned into a lasting career. “I’ve stayed because of the people, the opportunities for advancement, and the company values,” he says.
Throughout his journey, Ed has felt consistently supported. Even before the launch of VetBloom, Ethos and its legacy organizations were committed to continuing education. “They provided written materials, hosted CE events, offered generous CE allowances, and fostered a culture of learning,” he recalls.
Culture Moment
Ethos stands apart by backing its values with action. “Many organizations talk about supporting technicians—Ethos actually does,” Ed emphasizes. Veterinary nurses at Ethos are encouraged to grow, learn, and work at the top of their license and comfort level. It’s a place where mentorship and career progression aren’t just possible—they’re expected.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Ed is passionate about helping others grow. His advice to early-career veterinary nurses or those considering credentialing? “Never stop learning. Take every opportunity. Don’t rush into a VTS—find your passion first.” His own path was influenced by mentors and a strong support system, including his husband, Walter, who stood by him during the demanding VTS certification process.
Why Nutrition Matters
During his time in Internal Medicine at Bulger Veterinary Hospital, Ed witnessed the power of nutrition in transforming patient outcomes. One standout case involved a diabetic cat whose owner, after some initial struggles, became fully engaged in care. With Ed’s guidance, the cat eventually went into remission. It’s stories like this that reinforce his belief in the value of education and personalized care.
Life Beyond the Clinic
Outside of work, Ed and his husband Walter live on a small family farm in Massachusetts. They enjoy “glamping” in their motorhome and spending time with their horses and elderly chickens.
