Blood Donor Awareness Month: Behind the Scenes of Saving Lives

January 13, 2026

Every day, veterinary blood donors help save the lives of dogs and cats in critical need. While blood banking often happens quietly behind the scenes, there is no substitute for the lifesaving impact these programs provide. As we recognize Blood Donor Awareness Month, it’s an opportunity to highlight what blood banking looks like across Ethos Veterinary Health and why this work matters so deeply to patient care.

Today, Ethos supports a robust and growing blood banking ecosystem, including:

  • 24 processing blood bank programs
  • 25 whole blood donor programs
  • Programs spanning coast to coast, including Hawaii
  • Approximately 1,700 active blood donors, including roughly 300 feline donors and 1,400 canine donors

These numbers continue to evolve, but they represent a significant community of donors and hospital teams working together to support patients when they need it most.

Blood banking is one of many ways Ethos is advancing how veterinary medicine is practiced; by investing in the infrastructure, clinical expertise, and hospital-based programs that make complex, lifesaving care possible. This work reflects a broader commitment to supporting teams, strengthening medicine, and expanding what’s possible for patients across emergency and specialty care.

What’s important to understand is that there is no alternative to blood products produced through these programs. Blood cannot be manufactured. When a patient needs a transfusion, the only option is blood generously donated by another animal. In veterinary medicine, blood products remain difficult to source, and access can be limited without hospital-based donor programs.

Each donor may contribute one or more units of blood over time, meaning these programs collectively support thousands of lifesaving transfusions each year. Without them, many of the patients treated in emergency and specialty settings simply would not have access to the care they need.

Blood banking is complex, highly regulated work that depends on trained teams, thoughtful protocols, and dedicated donors. Behind every successful transfusion is a coordinated effort, from donor recruitment and screening to collection, processing, storage, and administration, designed to keep patients safe and ensure blood is available when it’s urgently needed.

At Ethos, we are committed to building blood donor programs that prioritize donor wellbeing and patient safety, while producing high-quality blood products across our hospital-based programs.

To every donor, donor family, and hospital team involved in this work: thank you. Every time a team steps up to the donation table, lives are impacted in ways that extend far beyond a single moment.
