Advancing Veterinary Medicine Through Innovative Training
September 23, 2025
At Ethos Veterinary Health, we believe that great veterinary medicine starts with great training. Gareth Buckley, MA, VetMB, DACVECC, DECVECC, our Director of Formal Training Programs, is excited to be part of the growth of Ethos’ training programs. As a former medical director and CMO, he saw firsthand some of our industry’s gaps in training and the urgent need for more support for hospital teams.
Our training programs focus not only on clinical excellence, but also on communication, efficiency, and wellbeing—the skills that are so key to a sustainable and rewarding career. Because these programs take place in some of the best and busiest veterinary hospitals in the world, you’ll graduate prepared to be a clinically excellent, highly effective, and team-oriented veterinarian.
Innovation and Research
We focus on the real-world skills veterinarians need to be successful. That’s why Ethos is collaborating with specialty colleges, veterinary schools, and industry experts to lead a revolution in training and assessment. Competency frameworks make it clear what skills are needed for each role—and give you a roadmap to get there.
Maybe you’re an ER veterinarian who wants to expand into surgery, or a criticalist ready to launch an extracorporeal therapy program. With a competency framework, you’ll have the guidance, training, and assessment tools to grow with confidence.
Through our unique partnership with Ethos Discovery, interns, residents, and advanced practitioners also have the opportunity to participate in clinical research—work that deepens our understanding of disease and opens new treatment options for patients and pet families.
Looking Ahead
Technology is becoming an ever-greater part of our lives as veterinary professionals, and our training programs reflect that. Integration of cutting-edge tech and AI is helping us scale and individualize learning—so you can train in the way you learn best.
At Ethos, VetBloom will play a key role in advancing this next phase of training. As our digital learning ecosystem, it provides a central hub for structured content, competency tracking, and credentialing that aligns directly with our training programs. By integrating VetBloom more deeply into daily learning and development, we can scale training, support career progression, and ensure every Ethos team member has access to the resources they need—when and how they need them.
New resources include seminars on naturalistic decision-making and hospital finances, a build-out of the “Five Buckets of ER Retention,” an AI-facilitated journal club, and referral-level exotics care training. Coming soon: our Diagnostic Imaging competency framework, with more on ER surgery and Internal Medicine residency training.
Meet the Leader Behind the Vision
I am originally from the UK and came to the US in 2006 to complete an ECC internship and residency at Tufts. I later spent 13 years on faculty at the University of Florida, teaching, practicing, and leading hospital teams before joining Ethos in 2023. I know firsthand the importance of strong, supportive training programs—and I’m passionate about helping veterinarians build careers that are both rewarding and sustainable.
