Dr. Lindsay Renzullo: Building a Meaningful Career Starts with Balance

Lindsay Renzullo, DVM, brings a thoughtful, people-centered approach to leadership shaped by experience, empathy, and a commitment to balance. As Medical Director at Port City Veterinary Referral Hospital in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, she leads with a focus on connection, mentorship, and long-term career sustainability.

For Dr. Renzullo, women’s leadership in veterinary medicine today is not just important, it’s essential. With women now making up the majority of veterinarians in the U.S., their presence at the leadership table strengthens connections with teams and fosters workplaces where people feel understood on professional and personal levels. To her, leadership means guiding teams through complex challenges while modeling resilience and compassion.

As a wife and mother of three, Dr. Renzullo brings a perspective shaped by balancing a demanding medical career with a full home life. That balance has given her clarity, empathy, and a deep appreciation for the many roles people carry outside of work. While every woman’s experience is different, she recognizes a shared understanding among many in the profession, one that strengthens relationships and enriches how leaders support their teams.

When asked what advice she would give to women entering veterinary medicine, Dr. Renzullo emphasizes possibility and sustainability. She describes the profession as dynamic, with countless paths and niches to explore. Her guidance is clear: trust yourself, stay open to where the field may take you, and prioritize work–life balance from the very beginning. Balance, she believes, isn’t just achievable; it’s one of the keys to building a long, fulfilling, and meaningful career.

Mentorship and structured development play a central role in that sustainability, and Dr. Renzullo sees Ethos as a standout in this area, particularly within emergency medicine. She points to Ethos’ exceptional commitment to mentorship, development, and long-term career support as a reflection of its investment in the entire hospital community.

For doctors early in their ER careers, we offer robust learning opportunities, including journal clubs, national lectures, and ER Immerse (ERi), a program designed to provide intentional mentorship and a strong foundation in emergency medicine. ERi’s thoughtfully structured framework helps new ER doctors build skills and confidence in a supportive environment.

That support doesn’t stop with early-career clinicians. For more experienced doctors, Ethos provides advanced pathways for development, including the Ethos ABVP Guided program. This unique, three-year guided curriculum allows ER doctors to pursue board certification through weekly sessions and dedicated mentors, exemplifying Ethos’ long-term commitment to helping doctors thrive at every stage of their careers.

Programs like ERi, Dr. Renzullo said, can fundamentally change a career trajectory. Starting in a hospital that prioritizes learning and embeds mentorship into its culture ensures that new doctors are supported not only clinically but also personally. With structured guidance, transparent communication, and committed mentors, these programs provide the confidence, skills, and foundation young doctors need to succeed. “They don’t just shape a career,” she said. “They elevate it.”

Through her leadership, advocacy for mentorship, and focus on balance, Dr. Renzullo continues to demonstrate the lasting impact women leaders have on the future of veterinary medicine.
