Welcome to Ethos Veterinary Health’s veterinary student externship program! Our externships are tailored for veterinary students seeking practical experience in Emergency and Specialty Veterinary Medicine. Whether you are looking to earn credits or immerse yourself in our hospital culture, our placements span 2-4 weeks and offer valuable experience and learning opportunities.
What is a Veterinary Externship?
A veterinary student externship provides short-term, immersive learning opportunities under the guidance of licensed veterinarians. It allows students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings and gain practical experience in diagnosing and treating animals.

Essential Experience
Our veterinary externship programs offer you an active learning experience where you participate in daily hospital rounds and engage in case discussions, contributing your observations and questions. While primarily observational, you will also assist in these tasks based on your skills and current rotation, gaining practical experience that enhances your understanding of veterinary medicine in the private practice setting
- Rotation Diversity: Participate in outpatient care, emergency management, surgeries, diagnostics, and client interactions.
- Learning Opportunities: Engage in daily hospital rounds, contribute to case discussions, and observe diverse veterinary practices.
- Hands-on Experience: Depending on your skills and rotation, participate in practical tasks with supervision and guidance from our expert veterinarians and veterinary technicians.
- Experience Life in Practice: See the workflows and live the team dynamics of the country’s leading emergency and referral hospitals.
Unrivaled Resources
As an extern at one of our network hospitals you are automatically enrolled into our National Externship Curriculum. Our curriculum is hosted on our learning platform, VetBloom.
Additional opportunities for students from distributed model schools:
Students from both traditional and distributed model schools are welcome to join an Ethos hospital in any of the elective rotations. In addition to elective rotations, some hospitals partner with distributed model schools to offer Core rotations “preceptorships”. These are usually arranged directly through your school, and your school can direct you to the hospitals that have these partnerships.
