Celebrating 40 Years of Compassion, Innovation, and Care at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital

From Small Practice to Global Leader
Forty years ago, Red Bank Veterinary Hospital (RBVH) opened its doors as a six-person practice in New Jersey. Today, it has grown into one of the world’s leading specialty and emergency veterinary hospitals but according to founder Tom Trotter, VMD, its foundation has remained the same: compassionate care.
This year, RBVH is celebrating four decades of advancing veterinary medicine, supporting pets and families through difficult moments, and building a culture rooted in teamwork, resilience, and innovation.
Originally offering general practice alongside neurology services, RBVH now includes more than 430 team members and nearly every specialty in modern veterinary medicine, including cardiology, surgery, oncology, rehabilitation, diagnostic imaging, avian and exotics care, and more. The hospital also operates canine and feline blood banks.
The hospital has expanded significantly over the years, moving from its original location to a custom-built facility in Tinton Falls in 2004 before opening its current 108,000-square-foot hospital in Red Bank in 2024. Despite the transition, patient care never paused.
“When we moved in 2024 from one building to the next, we did not stop service for even one hour,” said Liz Hilliard, RBVH’s Marketing Manager and Hospital Ambassador. “We remained fully operational throughout the entire move.”
Advancing Medicine and Investing in Education
RBVH’s impact extends beyond patient care. The hospital launched its Internship Program in 1993 and Residency Program in 2002, helping train hundreds of veterinary professionals over the years. It also developed an Accredited Veterinary Assistant (AVA) certification program, reinforcing its commitment to education and professional growth.
Innovation has long been part of RBVH’s story. Early in its history, the hospital performed the first MRI on a foal referred from the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center, helping establish its reputation as a leader in advanced veterinary medicine.
Built on Compassion and Resilience
Throughout major events; including Superstorm Sandy and the COVID-19 pandemic; RBVH continued caring for patients while supporting both its teams and local community.
That commitment is reflected in the many longtime team members who have spent decades helping shape the hospital’s culture and legacy, including veterinarians, technicians, and support staff.
Forty years after opening its doors, RBVH continues to advance veterinary medicine while remaining grounded in the compassionate care that has defined the hospital since day one.
