Sepsis is caused by a severe infection that enters the bloodstream and is associated with a high mortality rate. This high mortality rate has remained unchanged over the last three decades even though there has been active research in the area. The primary complication of sepsis that contributes to its high mortality is the severe systemic inflammatory response that develops. It is believed that new tests and treatments for sepsis could be developed which target this inflammatory process. In this study, blood samples from dogs with and without sepsis will be collected for genomic (i.e. DNA and RNA) analysis to see if a genetic target could be used in the development of these new tests and treatments. If identified, future trials will be conducted to further investigate the value of that target in a clinical setting.
- Dogs diagnosed with sepsis caused by a rupture of the intestine
- Weigh more than 10 lb.
- Not on any anti-inflammatories, steroids, or other immunosuppressive medications
