Electroencephalogram (EEG)

October 19, 2019

Seizures are one of the most common reasons pets are referred to a veterinary neurologist. There are multiple conditions that can mimic seizure activity including syncope (fainting) and a variety of movement disorders. These conditions often make it difficult for veterinarians to confidently diagnose and treat seizure disorders.

Veterinary neurologists can utilize electroencephalography (EEG) to help identify patients who are experiencing seizures. EEG evaluates electrical activity within the brain utilizing small needle electrodes in the scalp. There are multiple abnormal electrical patterns which are frequently seen in patients who suffer from seizures. Identification of these patterns can help veterinary neurologists definitively diagnose seizure activity and guide treatment. Like BAER testing, EEG may be helpful in assessing patients with complications from systemic illness.
